Describing Clothes So They Come Out Right

14 October 2026 · 3 min read

You can describe a face and a setting perfectly and still get an outfit you never asked for. Clothes are where pictures drift the most, because a short description leaves a great deal open. The fix is not more words for the sake of it, but the right few words in the right places.

Name the fabric

Fabric changes everything about how clothing looks in a picture. Satin catches the light, wool looks soft and heavy, leather has a hard shine, cotton looks everyday and relaxed. Saying what something is made of does more than any amount of adjectives about how it should look.

Say how it fits

Loose, fitted, cropped, oversized, high waisted: fit is the second thing people notice about clothing after colour. Without it the result tends to land somewhere in the middle, which rarely looks like anything in particular.

Give one clear colour

A single colour named plainly works better than a list. Deep red or pale grey is easy to follow. Several colours spread across one outfit often blend together or end up in the wrong places, so keep extra colours for small details like a belt or a pair of shoes.

Describe the outfit from the top down

Listing pieces in the order a person would see them, from the neckline down to the shoes, keeps the description tidy and makes it less likely that one item gets lost or swapped for another.

Keep it the same when you want it the same

If you are building a set of pictures around one look, reuse the exact same outfit wording every time. Changing even a word or two can quietly change the clothes, which breaks the feeling that every picture belongs to the same day.

Note the outfits that work

When an outfit comes out looking right, save the wording beside the picture. A small collection of reliable outfits means you can build new scenes quickly without starting from nothing each time.
